Know the facts about Autism....

  • Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3.
  • Individuals with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and nonverbal communication, social interactions, and play activities.
  • The last CDC survey indicated 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys will be diagnosed with autism. Autism prevalence figures are growing.
  • ASD is reported to occur in all racial,  ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.
  • Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average.
  • There is no medical detection or cure for autism. However, autistic children likely progress…….it is not a hopeless condition.
  • About 40% of children with autism do not speak. About 25-30% of children with autism have some words at 12-18 months of age and then lose them, which is called regression. Others might speak, but likely later in childhood.
  • Autism is the fastest growing developmental disorder, yet most underfunded.
  • A recent Danish study found that the mortality risk among those with autism was nearly twice that of the general population, in large part due to drowning and other accidents.
  • As of today, there’s no single case of autism. All that is known is that there are noticeable differences on brain scans on those with ASD. Some researchers are pushing toward a genetic link.
  • Autism is a spectrum, and all individuals on the spectrum exhibit different types and different levels of impairment.

Therefore, I will leave you with my favorite quote, "If you meet one person with autism, you meet one person with autism."
